Every stitch of this city is beautiful - Prague I travelled to Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Venice last April (from the 13th to the 24th) and Prague was by far my...
On a whim I suggested to my boyfriend that we visit Prague for our honeymoon, should we ever get married. Little did I know, he had an engagement ring in his bag and proposed later that evening. Because of my comment earlier in the day, we had to go to Prague after the wedding.
Unlike many European destination points, Prague was unscathed by the War, so it boasts some of the most breathtaking landmarks in all of Europe. From the old town square to the sprawling castle on the hill, the entire city is truly magical. From a tourist’s standpoint there was no shortage of sights to see: we spent an entire day exploring the overwhelming St. Vitus Cathedral and another learning about the history of the Czech Jews at the Jewish Museum. The history and mythology of Prague is rich, and there are surprises lurking behind every corner.
Our favourite thing about the city was the lack of North American influence. Whereas cities like Paris and Amsterdam are plagued with American chain stores, Prague’s ties to Communism has left a lot of the local flavor in tact. We ate primarily in Czech restaurants (the food is very, very heavy. But it is also very, very cheap) and drank gallons of delicious Czech beer. We also drank in a lot of the local culture. Prague is known for its black light theatre and marionette performances. I highly recommend the National Marionette Theatre’s production of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. It’s very bizarre. There are also many classical concerts to take in, held mainly in churches.
Romantic and very inexpensive, Prague was the perfect vacation spot for a young couple without a lot of cash. There’s always something going on there and always something strange to see (you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a Czech Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band singing in phonetic English). On a side note, I became quite ill with tonsilitis while I was there and had to visit a doctor. I was treated very well and very swiftly. I give their medical system a thumbs up.
If you want to break out of Prague’s magical spell while you’re there, one thing that does put the city’s beauty in perspective is a trip out to the city’s communist housing. We rode the subway to the end of the line and emerged to see a sea of identical grey buildings that house the majority of Prague’s citizens. The trip made us appreciate how lucky we were to spend the rest of our time among the city’s historical landmarks.
I would return to Prague if given the chance. Surprisingly affordable and exotic and less tourist crazy than the rest of Europe it makes for a great romantic adventure. A couple words of advice though: bring an umbrella and watch your wallet like a hawk!
