Review Topic: Overview

In early summer, 1999, I enjoyed a UniWorld cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Taking the better part of two weeks, the cruise was on a small river boat built by the East German government originally for the Communist Party bureaucrats. Though the rooms were small, they were efficiently designed, and each room had a private bath and shower. Storage was adequate, and the beds consisted of two twin pull out beds.

Although I generally really dislike "packaged" tours, this one by UniWorld did take one places one would never get to on one’s own, plus the convenience of having the same room every night, and not having to schlep baggage from one hotel to another was great. There was plenty of free time in both St. Pete and Moscow, so one could ride the subways to one’s heart’s content.

We arrived in one of St. Petersburg’s airports mid day on the second day (you lose a day on the 10 hour flight). We were met by representatives of the tour company, and took a bus to the boat. Since the docks are usually in the less desirable part of town, we got to see the ‘underside’ of St. Petersburg. We settled in and had two more days in St. Pete.

On the river/lake/canal trip, we stopped in five cities or towns, ranging from a hamlet with probably 500 people to cities with 100,000 or so. We had shore tours with different guides in each city. Though one expects a little pressure to shop, it really wasn’t an inordinate inconvenience.

We ended our trip in Moscow 11 days later, and we had two and one/half days in the capital city. We had two tours of the city, with an optional one of the subway.

This was one of the best trips I’ve taken. Exposure to the Russians, whom we know so little about, really, except for what the media gives us, was illuminating. Some impressions: There are really two Russias; Moscow and the rest of Russia. The country is a very poor country, though the Russians are extremely successful and efficient in rebuilding the tourist sights, such as the churches, which were neglected or shuttered during the Soviet era. There were a surprising number of soldiers in uniform walking around in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The gambling casinos in Moscow are probably the newest, brightest buildings in town. And the most lasting impression? Though they are relatively new at it, capitalism is alive and thriving!

I would recommend this river trip most enthusiastically!
