Freiburg, the Euphrat, and Fiesta - Germany

In Germany the fridgerators are the only slightly bigger than American kitchen cabinets. They have cake and coffee every afternoon at 4. And don’t think about not finishing your plate ever. I thought they were going to deport me for not finishing every plate. But you get through those portions, I warn you.
Germany has some really excellent yogurt, but don’t get confused with sahne, which is a sweet cream more than a yogurt, and if you’re expecting yogurt this may make you a little sick.
The beer? I don’t know, the best beer in Germany was a brewery/restaurant, Feirling’s, that could make all American beer bow to its leiderhosen. Feirling’s is in Freiburg, a town of 300,000, in the Black Forest, the Schwartzwald. Freiburg also has these excellent stores, Tee-Peter, which have huge tea selections in bulk. I recommend Blutenorange. Ah. So excellent, strong and delicate.
Freiburg also has Euphrat, which is the best, best, best kebab place in Germany. Trust me, Kreutzberg doesn’t have anything on the Euphrat. Luscious. For 5 DM, $2 US, you can get a veggie kebab which will melt your heart: bulgur, red beans, mint, parsley, cucumber, feta, yogurt sauce, all on a freshly made tortilla bread. Seriously, for three weeks after leaving the charming BRD in Italy I was pining to death for some Euphrat.
The scary thing about Germany is how Disney it seems. The biggest little village near my boyfriend’s grandparents is Kirchzarten (which I can’t pronouce) and it’s so. . . Disney land. So perfect, worse than Darien, CT. It’s worse at night, too well lit. And they have terrible ethnic food. Don’t have the local veggie kebab and don’t go to this new restaurant Fiesta for margaritas. Or burritos. Or anything remotely Tex-Mex because all they have is Daiquiris, one taco on the menu, and chips and salsa. No goddamn burritos. Argh, all I wanted this summer was burritos. All of Germany knows my damn whining.
Oh, yeah, and auf Deutsch, it’s “di-keer-ey.” I went in asking for a “maaaango dackerey” and got a curious look. And then I tried to think up the worst way I could possibly make daiquiri sound, and I got it right. Just, beware.
The exchange rate was lovely for us, the Summer of 2001, low due to the Euro. Or is it euro?
Some great German products to look for is Kneipp, a fabulous body care company with natural oils in which to bathe, also with duschgel and bath fizzies, very affordable in Germany, very expensive here; Dr. Oetker, very good cooking mix company; the Knoor dry Asian soup packets for sure, and. . . really good food.
Driving in Germany -no, I didn’t go on the Autobahn, but everyone drives insanely. I just thought it was my boyfriend and his dad, but it’s also his dad, Dan’s grandfather. But mostly all the drivers are excellent, they might pass you, but everyone’s an impressive and safe driver.
The DeutschBahn system is great, clean, new, though expensive. But cheap for Americans, get the Europass, or the Selectpass Saverpass, what we did. Three contiguous
European countries for sooo cheap. Excellent bargain.
Oh, and one thing I forgot, check out the bretzlen rolls, made out of pretzle dough. Oh, I am corrected, they are officially Laugenwecken. Yes.
(Check out my Berlin review for actual details of Berlin, beyond, sigh, just food and shopping.)
