Iceland is a truly bizarre and exotic place to visit. It can seem drab and dreary at a glance but really the island is just full of beautiful treasures. And one of the best things about Iceland is that is generally ignored as a travel destination and thus not overflowing with tourists. How many people have you heard of going to or even considering travelling to Iceland? Not many I’m sure which makes it even more enticing to the traveller really wanting to find adeventure.
Iceland is purely volcanic. It is comprised of many active volcanoes that constantly and land mass every year. But don’t fear, they aren’t the dangerous kind that cover towns in lava, they generally leak slowly. Being made of lava, Iceland does not have much plant or animal life. They do have lots of short, stocky horses who roam free about the countryside. There are many interesting little areas that you should explore when visiting. Many geysirs and hot springs pop out of nowhere. Low mountains dominate the inland while craggy shores surround the island. The outdoor life is very strange and interesting.
The people of Iceland truly are one of the best things about going there. They are an extremely intelligent culture where almost every inhabitant attend a university. The are polite and never look down on you for being American or any other culture. Most of them can speak English surprisingly well. The diet in Iceland however is terrible. I do not eat fish or lamb so this was not a good eating situation for me. That really is all that they eat. Don’t eat the lamb dogs! They all think that lamb hot dogs are great but really they are horrible. Everything in Iceland is VERY expensive too. Everything is imported so prepare to only pay outrageous prices.
Overall, Iceland is the strangest place I have ever travelled to. You are constantly surprised of the intoxicating mysteries of this land. It is exciting and so alien from anything that most people have ever seen. Go there for the adventure.
