Rejecting our cruise ship tours, we set out to explore this lovely city on our own. Big surprise was the the city had FREE shuttle buses waiting at port side to drive us into the old city.
We did the walking tour described in Rick Steve’s book and didn’t miss a thing. The old city was as lovely and quaint as we had expected and even on our own we learned much of the city’s history. People were great about pointing us on our way when we got disoriented and identifing the sites we were passing.
We are big shoppers and found bargains galore. Knit goods sold for far less than they had in Norway and were of equal quality. Do recommend shopping NOW because as this tiny town becomes more and more a big stop for the cruise lines, they are bound to figure out that they can charge more for their lovely products.
My only regret is that we had no time (5 hours) to get further from the city since I have heard that there is much more lovely countryside to be seen.
