I was just in Amsterdam a week ago for 2 1/2 weeks to visit my boyfriend that was working there for the summer.
We went to the Heineken Brewery to start. The tour was not worth it. First of all it is a self guided tour and could be done in a few minutes because each room that you enter is very boring and you speed up to the next room to see if it will be any better. The only thing that is worthwhile on the tour is the free beer that you get at certain points on the tour. Also the free beer glass at the end is nice, but you could just buy that at the gift shop. So next we headed to the Van Gogh Museum. I loved the museum because I am a big fan of his paintings. Even if you are not a fan of Van Gogh you should check this museum out because they have a lot of other nice paintings and artwork.
On the weekdays I was by myself because he was at work. I found that if you are traveling alone in this city you need to be cautious of your surrounding but in general it is a safe city. Everything was very easy to get to for people that dont know the city that well yet. Transportation was easy and cheap, also there were taxis available. But if you didn’t want to take the tram or taxi most things were in walking distance.
During my week days I got to explore the city and I found that the Museum district is a great area to go to, the Rijksmusem which has Rembrandt’s painting, also in that area a great shopping street called the P.C Hooftstaat.
The food is also delicious! There are many Asian, French, Italian restaurants. Plus there are lots of cafes and coffee shops to visit. The food I found to be a delight and inexpensive! The cafes are good to sit and people watch along with the Dutch locals. The cafes serve excellent toasties which are sandwiches, along with great selections of beer and drinks. The coffee shops are a must visit place if you are into that scene, because you will find them no other place than Amsterdam!
However after all these wonderful things that I am saying there were some areas that I found to be cons. I thought that the streets were dirty and that it was hard to walk in the streets because there was a fear that I was going to be hit by a flood of bikes. Also after spending 2 1/2 weeks alone in the daytime I found myself getting bored and rather than going out I stayed at home to watch T.V. So I think that less than 2 1/2 weeks stay would be best.
