A very modern European City - Munich

I had an opportune chance to visit Europe this past summer, between my summer internship and my last year of college. Unfortunately, I only had 9 days to make a trip through France, Germany, and Italy. Clearly, I had to make wise choices as to which cities I would visit.
As for Germany, I selected Frankfurt and Munich. Being with only one other friend, and both of us having no background in speaking German, we didn’t dare venture into the smaller non-English speaking countryside towns (probably save that for next time). Though both Frankfurt and Munich were quite modernized, I, for some reason, had a much better time in Munich. There just seemed to be so much to do!
I spent 3 days in Munich and everyday was just as fun as the last. The first day, we walked around and saw some sights. We then headed to one of the many beer gardens to relax. There we had some bratwurst, sauerkraut, baked chicken and a couple liters of great beer out of those gigantic mugs they have over there. We then ended the night by going to a club quite intoxicated and danced the night away.
The following day, we went shopping in the Marienplatz sector of Munich. There are stores of all types, especially those of many top European clothing labels. We then went into a small outdoor villa to sample Munich’s great selection of beers, then rushed to New Town Hall to see the famous Glockenspiel which goes off at 11 o’clock and then again at noon — quite a sight to see. Along the way, we also saw many impressive buildings with intricate carvings such as the city hall, other government buildings, and numerous monstrous cathedrals.
For the afternoon and into the early evening we relaxed at the Munich’s Englischer Garten. It is somewhat like a country-like retreat inside a busy city — somewhat like Central Park is to New York City (except it’s a beer garten!). At the Englischer Garten, there are small ponds, swans, walkers, bikers and people tanning. In short, a perfect way to relax on a perfect sunny day.
On our final day, we rented a car and took the S-Bahn all the way to Lake Starnburg (about an hour and a half from Munich) and took a cruise. The lake was peaceful, full of people, and the weather was beautiful. You can rent speedboats, paddle boats, stop off at many piers to get drinks of beer and food and just relax.
Since my time was limited, I was not able to see the much recommended Neuschwanstein castle. This castle was built by King Ludwig the II of Bavaria. It is know as one of his the ultimate dream castles. This is about a 3 hour trip from Munich, and is supposed to be absolutely breathtaking. So popular, in fact, that the lines are said to be at least 2 hrs. long if you don’t get there early in the morning. If you are staying at a hotel in Munich, this obviously makes for a entire day trip since it is 6 hrs. total of driving to and from the castle. So, if you want to undertake this, plan ahead. A picture of the castle can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/4080/neusch.htm.
Although I was unable to see a castle, my trip to Bavaria as well as Munich in particular was a blast. I would recommend it anyone looking for a good time and great place to relax.
